The American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS) is a non-profit organization that conducts examinations for sonography credentialing.

The credentials offered are Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer (RDMS) and Registered Diagnostic Cardiac Sonographer (RDCS). Specialties for medical sonography accreditation include obstetrics and gynecology, fetal echocardiography, abdomen, breast, and neurosonology. Cardiovascular specialties for accreditation include fetal, pediatric, and adult echocardiography.

ARDMS certifications are accredited by the National Commission for Certifying Agencies. Exam candidates must have completed a post-secondary sonography program that includes a physics class with grades equal to or higher than a C.

Two comprehensive exams are required for accreditation. Candidates must pass the Sonography Principles and Instrumentation Exam along with one specialty exam. Specialty exams should be completed within five years of passing the Sonography Principles and Instrumentation Exam.

The five specialties leading to the Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer certification are:

 <li>Breast</li>
 <li>Fetal Echocardiography</li>
 <li>Neurosonology</li>
 <li>Obstetrics and Gynecology</li>
</ul>

For those aspiring to become Registered Diagnostic Cardiac Sonographers, they can specialize in:
<ul>
 <li>Adult Echocardiography</li>
 <li>Pediatric Echocardiography</li>
 <li>Fetal Echocardiography</li>
</ul>

The Sonography Principles and Instrumentation Exam is a two-hour computerized test featuring 120 multiple-choice questions on various topics.
